What Does A Holistic Approach Mean In Mental Health?

Mental Health is a complex matter. After all, being human is a complex affair, so it stands to reason that there are many ways to address mental health issues. This blog will discuss the holistic approach to mental health and within that will explain the holistic approach meaning.

As with many therapeutic methods of healing, ‘holistic’ is a word that takes many forms especially today with social media and the boom of self care.

What Is The Meaning Of Holistic Approach?

It can be hard to tell what is challenging us at any point in time, and we might not know what will help us move past a specific obstacle. A holistic approach means being open to alternatives and possibilities for change. There are so many traditions and outlooks in the world that have all attempted to simplify and guide us through life, and it is within these practices that we discover the approach that resonates with us. One size does not fit all and so holistic, by its very nature, is an approach uniquely suited to you and your mental health needs.

Often it is assumed that opting for a holistic approach means going against Western medicine or what is outlined by the HSE however, this is not the case. From a therapeutic perspective, existential philosophy, eastern embodiment practices, and psychotherapy form mutually beneficial ways to approach being human. One can work without the other but they can also come together and encourage one another to work in a way that serves your mental health.

The Importance of a Holistic Approach

When we feel physical pain we get a prescription, when we feel mental pain many of us also seek a prescription, and they do their job, they treat the symptom. With that in mind, this blog also wishes to explain the importance of a holistic approach to managing pain and discomfort. Why? Because it is often within the holistic approach that we can treat the cause of your pain, not just its physical embodiment.

Adopting a holistic approach to health in general can work wonders as it promotes internal awareness, acceptance, and enables an individual to take charge of their overall health and wellbeing. Again, it is important to mention that the holistic approach does not replace any medical requirements, it is simply another way to uncover and work through what has caused you pain.

In regard to some mental health issues, it is not recommended that medications be used for the rest of your life. Adopting a holistic approach is a way in which you can safely explore, and with time, relieve some of the symptoms of your pain naturally.

Examples Of Holistic Practices

Holistic therapy is practiced here at Alex Delogu. It is a personal approach influenced by Alex’s own life experiences and personal inclinations, and it embodies both psychotherapy and forms of body centered therapy such as Tai Chi, Qi Gong, and many other meditations.
